This Earth Day, United Way of Greater Los Angeles is getting its hands in the soil. On Wednesday, April 22nd, join us at a newly acquired urban farm site in Long Beach as we help Partnership for Growth LA and Sowing Seeds of Change bring a new growing space to life — weeding, cleaning, and planting alongside community partners who are building food equity and workforce opportunity in South and West LA. Sign up today and grow with us.
Volunteers, please bring hats, sunscreen, refillable water bottles (as Sowing Seeds of Change operates as a low-waste organization), and masks if dust or debris would be bothersome to anyone.
Please do NOT bring plastic water bottles.
Street parking will be readily available.
Volunteers will support across several areas of the site, including the chicken coop, nursery, storage area, and planting spaces:
- Clearing debris from the chicken coop and storage areas
- Weeding across site areas
- Organizing nursery tables
- Ground preparation for the nursery
- Planting using donated plants
Tools
PFGLA and Sowing Seeds of Change will have several tools/supplies available on site, including wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, trowels, and gloves. Volunteers are welcome to bring their own gloves and hand tools (e.g., trowels) if they have them.
We are also planning for a few key material needs for the nursery and planting areas. Volunteers are welcome, but not required, to bring any of the following items if they can contribute:
- Weed suppressant
- Crushed concrete (for nursery flooring)
- Irrigation supplies
